Te Aka is a comprehensive, online, bilingual dictionary that includes encyclopaedic entries, idioms and grammatical explanations. The overall aim of the project is to support learners and speakers of Māori. In 2007, photographs of species and people began to be added. The historical loanwords collection was added in 2009, as were the sounds of all of the native birds. In 2015 sounds files of the pronunciation of words were also added. New entries and additional meanings continue to be added to the website almost daily.
Te Aka is also available as an app. With the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and Android app you can use the dictionary anywhere without the need to be online. The dictionary can also be found in hard copy form. Te Aka Māori-English, English-Māori Dictionary and Index, by John C Moorfield, comprises a selection of modern and everyday language that will be extremely useful for learners of the Māori language.
Currently we are researching synonyms to add to the dictionary as part of a wider project, Kupu Taurite, a Māori thesaurus.
An online survey was conducted in 2016, which confirms that attitudes towards Te Reo Māori are changing. For further details about the findings of the survey please see the final report.
