The Dictionary of Cook Islands Languages is an online dictionary aimed at providing quick access for learners and speakers of the languages of the Cook Islands. The project has involved the Institute research team working closely with elders and community in the Cook Islands and is a collaboration with the University of the South Pacific, Cook Islands campus, and the Ministry of Education, Cook Islands. The dictionary was launched with the community on Mangaia in April 2012.
The aim of this project is to eventually have separate, comprehensive dictionaries for each of the Indigenous languages of the Cook Islands. At this stage the Mangaian, Rarotongan and Tongarevan (Penrhyn) dictionaries are quite comprehensive, while the dictionaries of the other languages are in various stages of development using fluent speakers from those languages. Improvements will continue to be made on all of the dictionaries and content will be refined over time with new entries included.
