Objectives

The objective of this project is to translate two seminal works into te reo Māori. The two texts that have been chosen are Briar Grace-Smith’s play Purapurawhetū and Patricia Grace’s novel Tu. Both of these texts are being translated by Wiremu and Jossie Kaa.

Overview

The range of literature in te reo Māori is not substantial. There is a need to increase the number and range of texts available to readers of Māori. This project includes plans to

  • Translate two seminal pieces of literature written by New Zealand authors.
  • Once the translations have been completed and edited the texts will be available from the Te Ipukarea website.

Has this project been completed?

The works have been selected and permission has been agreed to by the authors and publishers. The translators began working on the translations in July 2010 and are due for completion in 2011.

Who will lead this project?

This project is being led by Professor Tania Ka‘ai, Director of Te Ipukarea.
