New Year's Honour for Te Wharehuia Milroy

Dr Te Wharehuia Milroy QSO, a foundation board member of Te Ipukarea, has been made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of merit in the 2012 New Year Honours list, for service to the Māori language.

A widely respected Tūhoe elder and academic, Dr Te Wharehuia Milroy, has  been involved in many local and national Māori language revitalisation initiatives, including the Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust. He received an honorary doctorate from Waikato University in 2005, where he had been a staff member since 1978.

He is still hugely active in the Māori language community on marae and as an invited speaker. He also tutors
tikanga Māori (cultural traditions) within a Māori language course aimed at developing the competency and
proficiency of fluent speakers of the Māori language, Te Panekiretanga o te reo.

Te Ipukarea acknowledges the significance of Dr Milroy’s long-term commitment and contribution towards the
mana, health and status of the language over many decades and congratulates him on this recognition.
